Conventionally, ghee has got an irreplaceable position in Indian cuisine and religion. But as society becomes health conscious, doubts persist in individuals' minds that the use of ghee adds to the cholesterol level in the human body. 

Ghee is not suitable for people having high cholesterol levels. 

Is that what bothers everyone?

As this notion prevails in the masses, people have begun to accept the idea that the consumption of ghee is responsible for high cholesterol and resulting in obesity. 

Let's have this myth examined in the light of truth.

Ghee or Clarified Butter- the healthiest source of fat

Studies have shown that up to 10% of pure cow ghee in your diet certainly plays a positive role in your serum lipid profile. The readings of total cholesterol improved with a consistent decrease in it along with LDL, very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). As lever cholesterol and triglycerides were measured, those showed remarkable development. Moreover, as cow ghee becomes the single source of healthy fat, calculated as 10% of the diet, liver lipids and fatty acids figures came down significantly and were on the positive side.  

Ghee is also higher in conjugated linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fat that help in fat loss.

Can persons with high cholesterol take cow ghee in their regular diet     

Too much of anything is bad for health. This goes in the case of consumption of ghee as well. If ghee is consumed in excess along with a sedentary lifestyle, it could prove harmful to human health.

As studies were conducted, more than 25% of the Indian urban population has high cholesterol, and less than 15% of the rural population suffer from the same. Doctors attribute this to a genetic cause and consequence of unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

Ghee is not helpful in the diet for heart patients.

It is the prevailing notion that ghee is strictly not part of the diet for patients suffering from heart ailments. Although, pure ghee is fat-rich, studies have found that pure cow ghee has saturated Omega-3 content of fatty acids that are good for the heart and cardiovascular system. A balanced diet with pure ghee as an ingredient in fact helps overall health development.

Ghee - Good for your heart. 

Ghee is distinguished for its quality in adding flavor to Indian dishes. Apart from that it has a high concentration of fats, and is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids; known to be good for heart health. 

A healthy and wholesome diet consisting of beans, vegetables, whole grains, along with 2-3 teaspoons of pure ghee is free from any health risks and would in fact be good for the heart. 

While pure cow ghee contains a high concentration of fats, it is rich in Omega 3. Omega 3 fatty acids are known to promote cardiovascular health. Studies suggest that people who consumed a spoonful of ghee daily had reduced serum cholesterol levels and a lower incidence of coronary artery disease.     

Does ghee have an enormous quantity of cholesterol in its content-True, or is it False?

The answer to this question is a resounding no. The cholesterol content in ghee is negligible at 1-2% of the total fat content.

Pure ghee has superior fat in its content. With 0.32% cholesterol in its composition, ghee could hardly cause any risk to your overall health if consumed in moderation with moderate physical excersie.

Pure ghee is known to have antioxidant properties which help reduce the risk of various, fatal health hazards such as arthritis, cancer other than keeping the heart healthy. 

Hence, cooking in ghee and consuming it in moderation will take care of our overall health as it also helps absorb essential vitamins and minerals from the food we consume.
